Bedroom Beauty
We spend a lot of time on-the-go: commuting to work, running the kids to school, lunch with the girls, weekend getaways, you name it. But at the end of the day, home is where you need to feel comfortable to rest, entertain, or even just walk around in your undies feeling happy and free. Maybe you prefer your birthday suit; hey, it’s all good!
Our home is not only where we eat, play and sleep, but also a space I want to love waking up to. A place I’ve purposefully created to be warm, beautiful and 100% functional for our family. Because, let’s be honest, who wants to come home to a place that just feels “meh”? Now I know everyone has their own style and maybe mine isn’t your cup of tea, but find a style that makes you feel good. One that makes you look around and say, “I love it!”
So, where to start?
Pick one room to tackle first so you don’t overwhelm yourself with too many spaces at once.
I’ll start with our master bedroom because it is 100% my favorite room in our entire house. Take a look at yours: Is it a sanctuary to retreat to at the end of the day or is it a catch-all for laundry, random toys and paperwork that may be from the oil change you had six months ago? I’m here to tell you, you will sleep better and be more content if you intentional about keeping your bedroom a space where you can relax. I’ve always kept ours TV-free because bedrooms should be for two things: sleeping and sex. Consider it. Removing electronic distractions from your bedroom is pretty liberating!
I digress…on to design. I actually chose our paint color first – which is typically not recommended as it’s easier to match paint to a fabric or finish than vice versa, but I loved Sherwin Williams’ Silvermist, so I totally broke that rule. Oops. Also, our master bedroom was BARE for a long time. (The space above the dresser is still an empty wall). However, the bed was the first thing we bought and it inspired the design for the entire room. You can absolutely buy all the pieces for your space all at once, even at the same store, but if you aren’t in love with a piece, I’m telling you, don’t buy it just because it was paired with your bed to fill your space. Wait; the right one will come along.
“I don’t know how to coordinate my socks! How can I coordinate a room?”
I’m not an interior designer by any stretch of the imagination, but I’ve found that flipping through home magazines, browsing Pinterest or roaming around stores that I love are great places to find inspiration. Create a board, cut out pictures you’re swooning after. If you stick to what lights a spark in you, it will all come together beautifully! I personally like light and airy with a little bit of glam, so the metal wrapped night stands and dresser were the perfect compliment to the ivory linen bed.
Lighting is everything. You’ve seen how the right filter can brighten up your social media feed and make it instantly more appealing? Same deal in a room. I chose the side lamps and chandelier to coordinate with the pulls on the nightstands and dresser so it would all tie together. Since it’s clear, crystal kept it light while still giving a touch of glam and the frames on the artwork above the night stands were in the same family too.
You spend over half your life in bed, why snuggle up to polyester bedding at night? I always say cotton is your best bet because you’ll find a zillion different thread counts in every price range. However, don’t count out linen as a lovey, breathable option as well. We opted for crisp, white cotton sheets with a Belgian linen duvet cover & shams and quilted lumbar throw pillows. Mixing textures will give you a beautiful designer look and you’ll always have the option to make small changes instead of having to switch out matchy-matchy bedding. Throw a quilt on the bottom of your bed to break up the duvet, plus a rug to ground it all, and you’ve got one gorgeous sleeping situation.
If you’re looking around your space thinking maybe it could use some love, then get out there and start creating the room of your dreams. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune – but a fresh look will make your home feel like a million bucks.
